I read the villains of narrative through data.
소개About
I am a doctoral student who studies the world’s many villains. I grew up in Busan, making an annual pilgrimage to G-Star at BEXCO, and after encountering Playdead’s LIMBO I set out to make “a game that feels like a coming-of-age film.” I spent both my B.S. and M.S. on games at Hongik University.
Of the three elements that make up a story — character, setting, and event — the one my attention kept returning to was character. Without a character, what use is an event or a setting? If, as Sartre had it, existence comes first and meaning follows, then character is the very existence of a story.
My favourite character is Izuku Midoriya. In a “bad hero” who saves the world yet cannot protect his own life in front of the person dearest to him, I felt a kind of evil (惡) — and realising that an engineering gaze, which quantifies everything, could not hold him, I moved into digital humanities. I am curious to see how tangled this thread becomes.
